If you get a lot of packages, the US Postal Service is asking you to consider getting a larger mailbox — but it’s not demanding that step.
Strategic Communications Manager Mark Inglett with the Kansas City office spoke with KVOE News as part of National Mailbox Improvement Week underway now:
Residents can get more information about the larger, Postal Service-approved mailboxes online at usps.com/packagemailbox.
While larger mailboxes have gotten a fair amount of national media attention this week, Inglett says the Postal Service is actually focusing on simple steps residents can take to make sure their mailboxes are in good working order, including:
*Replacing loose hinges if needed
*Repainting mailboxes that may have rusted or the paint has started to peel
*Remounting mailbox posts if needed
*Replacing or adding house numbers, especially from the side where a postal carrier approaches the house
One other thing Inglett mentioned in his interview this week with KVOE News: don’t vandalize mailboxes. They and the mail inside are protected by federal law, so people convicted of destroying federal property can spend up to three years in prison and be fined up to $250,000.
