The Kansas Highway Patrol noted increases in DUI arrests and speeding citations as part of its Memorial Day weekend enforcement period.
Troopers say there were 21 DUI arrests betwen 6 pm Friday and 11:50 pm Memorial Day, up slightly from 20 last year and 17 two years ago. Speeding citations increased from over 750 last year to 840 this year.
Safety belt citations for adults increased from 72 to 92, while citations for teenagers went up from six to seven. Child restraing citations also went up, from 16 to 21.
There were no fatal DUI-related crashes for the second straight year, but there was one non-DUI-related fatal wreck that happened outside Council Grove. Three people, all from Minnesota, were killed Saturday and four others, two from Council Grove and two from Minnesota, were seriously hurt.
