The Special Olympics Torch is in Emporia, but it won’t be for too long.
The torch arrived in Emporia late Wednesday afternoon with an escort provided by local law enforcement as part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Ride. After arriving at Sixth and Exchange the torch was then escorted to White Auditorium by the law enforcement contingent and local Special Olympians.
Carrying the torch Wednesday was Drake Lutes who will be competing in the Kansas Special Olympics state games in Wichita this weekend. Lutes says being a part of Wednesday’s activities was a great time.
Lutes adds he loves Special Olympics saying it’s a great team for him.
The torch will now make its way to the state games with local law enforcement set to head to El Dorado Thursday morning. Activities begin around 9:30 a.m. Thursday at 12th and Commercial and will also include the annual Ron’s Ride with KVOE Station Manager Ron Thomas set to make a trip to Olpe to raise funds for local Special Olympics athletes.
Before leaving Emporia for Olpe, there will be a stop at Hetlinger. To donate to Ron’s Ride, visit KVOE.com or call (620) 342-1400. Fundraising is already above $4,000.
