At least one area county is up for possible reimbursement money from the federal government after severe storms last month.
Morris County is among eight counties named in a Kansas Division of Emergency Management request for what’s called a Joint Public Assistance Program Preliminary Damage Assessment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA Region VII and Division of Emergency Management staffers will now assess severe thunderstorm damage, notably hail, straight-line winds, tornadoes and heavy rain happening between April 25-30. Specifically, teams are looking for damage to roads, bridges, utilities and other public infrastructure that may qualify for federal aid.
Parts of Morris County were under urban and small stream advisories April 26 due to heavy rain. Quarter-sized hail fell near Burdick on April 30.
State officials say more counties may be added to this request as the investigation continues. If damages meet federal thresholds, the state will then submit the necessary paperwork to start the reimbursement process.
