An Emporia man was arrested after a fatal crash in Johnson County on Sunday morning.
Jason Eli Brumley, age 34, was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, after a crash near the junction of Interstate 35 southbound and Sunflower Road before 8 am Sunday. Johnson County deputies say one vehicle crashed into another but didn’t specify how the wreck unfolded.
Brumley was identified as the driver “of the striking vehicle.” He was tested for alcohol content and later arrested.
The driver of the second vehicle, 76-year-old Sherry Pena, was dead at the scene. Two passengers, 45-year-old Natalia Pena and an unnamed six-year-old boy, were taken to an unspecified hospital with critical injuries but both were expected to survive.
It took nearly six hours before deputies cleared the crash site. Deputies mentioned the Johnson County Crime Scene Investigation and Accident Teams, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Transportation as assisting agencies.
Booking information from the Johnson County Detention Center lists a preliminary hearing at 9 am Wednesday. Bond is tentatively set at $350,000.
