The inaugural Emporia Civic Leadership Institute is off and running.
The institute began this past Tuesday with an introductory session that included activities, an address from City Manager Trey Cocking and a historic tour of Emporia led by Roger Heineken. City Director of Special Projects Tayler Wash says the inaugural class consists of 20 individuals from all walks of life with one common purpose.
The next session for the institute is Tuesday starting at 5:30 pm. All sessions will run from 5:30 pm to 8 pm every Tuesday between now and July 30.
The official graduation is set for August 6. Wash says once participants complete the program, it is her hope they will find ways to become more actively involved within the city.
The institute is meant to give Emporians a better look at and appreciation for the various departments within the city. Since announcing the institute earlier this year, Wash has said she hopes to make it an annual or biannual event and notes there are currently five individuals on the waiting list for the program.
