The third round of budget requests for the 2025 budget cycle highlighted the Lyon County Commission’s weekly action meeting Thursday.
Emporia Main Street submitted a flat request of $40,000 in the list of requesting agencies. Main Street Director Casey Woods says every dollar allocated to the agency from the county has a significant economic impact.
Also submitting requests Thursday were Emporia Public Library Director Pauline Stachinni on behalf of Lyon County’s libraries and Kansas Legal Services. For the Emporia Public Library Stacchini is seeking $215,000, a $15,000 increase from the previous year.
Stacchini says the additional dollars will be used to purchase Brainfuse, an online service that provides one-on-one tutoring for students.
Another increased request came from the Elmendaro Township library in Hartford which is seeking $40,000, a $3,000 increase from 2024. The Americus Township Library and North Lyon County District 1 Library in Allen are both asking for flat sums of $44,492 and $23,326 respectively.
Meanwhile, Kansas Legal Services is also seeking an increased appropriation submitting a request for $17,000, up $2,000 from 2024.
Thursday’s requests follow budget submissions from the Lyon County History Center, Emporia Senior Center, county Register of Deeds Office and the county’s Treasurer’s Office.
In separate business Thursday, commissioners approved a pair of quotes from IT Director Jean (like John) Barnett, the first from ValuNet Fiber totaling more than $24,100 and is for upgrades to the county’s fiber cable backbone in the Lyon County Courthouse, Sheriff’s Office and Courthouse Annex.
Commissioners also approved a better than $67,900 for switch updates in the same three locations and a better than $45,600 quote for yearly computer replacements. Both quotes came from CDWG.
An entrance culvert at 1027 Road 70, presented by Assistant Lyon County Engineer Jim Brull, also gained commission approval. The Lyon County Commission is set to reconvene Wednesday at 9 am for a study session inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
