Gas prices have dropped below $3 across the Emporia area recently.
According to AAA Kansas Public & Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward, it’s unusual for this time of the year to see prices drop at the pump when more and more people travel.
The average in Kansas is $3.04 per gallon, four cents below the average from the past week and 14 cents less than a month ago. Steward says gas prices are significantly lower from this time last year.
Steward says it’s hard to predict if gas prices continue to drop throughout the summer based on many factors that are thousands of miles away.
Steward says some of those factors can be potential war and conflicts that can affect crude oil prices and hurricane season approaching and affecting production on the Gulf Coast.
As of Tuesday morning, multiple gas stations in Emporia were at $2.99 a gallon. Areawide, the lowest gas price is $2.89 at Lebo and Beto Junction with the most expensive at $3.24 in Melvern.
