The Cottonwood River has climbed a bit above its revised crest at the Emporia gauge, but only minor flooding is expected and the flooding situation there should end soon.
Initially, the National Weather Service had a crest of 25.5 feet for the river, but the agency lowered the crest forecast to 22.6. The river actually went above 23 feet around midnight and was just under 23.1 feet as of 3:30 am. The river is flattening out and could go below flood stage Wednesday.
The river is currently in a flood warning until Wednesday evening.
All other flood alerts for Lyon and surrounding counties ended Monday.
Speaking of the flood situation, Lyon County’s road closure list was cut considerably Monday. Barricades are still in place at a few locations:
*Road G from 160 to 170
*Road J from 140 to 160
*Road K from 140 to 155
The Lyon County Highway Department also closed Roads 145 and 150, both from Road F to Kansas Highway 99.
All other roads that were closed since Sunday due to 2-6 inches of rainfall have now reopened. Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell says the remaining barricades will be removed once the roads have been inspected and cleared by the Highway Department. He says just because a roadway may not have water over it, does not mean it is safe to travel on.
