Forecasted temperatures have led to heat advisories for nearly the entire area.
Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties are under an advisory from 1 pm to 8 pm Thursday. Chase County is in a separate advisory from 1 pm to 7 pm.
The advisories reflect high temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indices between 100 to 108 degrees Thursday. Residents are encouraged to limit their time outdoors if possible, however, if you must be outside make sure you are hydrating regularly, wearing light, loose-fitting clothing and spend as much time in shade or air conditioning as possible.
Also, you should never leave children or pets in vehicles if you’re on errands or out shopping. Residents should also check on elderly neighbors and family members regularly, especially if they don’t have air conditioning.
In addition to the extreme heat, severe storm chances also re-enter the forecast Thursday evening. Storms are expected to develop after sunset, with hail to the size of golf balls and wind gusts up to 70 mph as the hazards.
Areas north of a line involving US Highway 50 and Interstate 35 are in a slight severe weather risk, while areas south of that general line are in a marginal risk. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more weather updates as they develop.
