Two Mississippi residents were hurt after a wreck near Emporia early Friday morning.
Lyon County Deputy Brandon Early says the wreck happened just after 2 am on Interstate 35 near the Road U junction. Early says 65-year-old Beatrice Blackman of Blytheville was driving a car southbound and fell asleep at the wheel. Blackman went into the center median and hit a culvert, rolling the car “numerous times.”
Blackman was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the wreck, but her passenger, 70-year-old Lewis Miles of Luxora, was not and was ejected. Both suffered suspected serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health for treatment. Miles was later transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, for additional treatment.
Lyon County deputies continue investigating. Emporia/Lyon County EMS also responded to the crash site.
