Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is asking the federal government for more time as she submits a request for a major disaster declaration after severe weather last month.
The time period in question is May 18-19, when the KVOE listening area saw high storm-generated winds up to 80 mph and related damage to trees and power equipment. Close to 4,000 Evergy customers lost power across the KVOE listening area, and there were several small storm-related fires that developed as well.
The governor’s request, if approved, would give state officials until Aug. 17 to finish preliminary damage assessments with an eye towards federal reimbursements through the Public Assistance program. That federal program reimburses damage for roads and bridges if the total costs reach a certain threshold.
