Along with the celebrations taking place for the National Teachers Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremonies will be a solemn time period Friday.
The rededication of the National Memorial to Fallen Educators at Emporia State University is at 10 am Friday, and two educators killed in the line of duty will be honored:
*Dan Marburger, principal at Perry (Iowa) High School, died Jan. 14, 10 days after he confronted a 17-year-old with a gun. His action was a distraction that allowed students to flee the school cafeteria. One student died and two other staff members and four students were wounded.
*Liberty High School teacher and coach Ryan Lantz in Clarksburg, West Virginia, was hit by a vehicle and killed in the school parking lot on Feb. 20.
The names of nearly 200 educators throughout America’s history are inscribed on three granite tablets at the memorial, with fundraising underway for a fourth tablet.
Following the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, the memorial was dedicated in June 2014 with two tablets and 114 names. It became a national memorial in 2018 after work in Congress by Senator Jerry Moran and then-Representative and now-Senator Roger Marshall.
KVOE and KVOE-TV at KVOE.com will air the rededication Friday morning.
