There may well be a gathering for Juneteenth in Emporia, although there are no plans for an official event.
Last year’s lead organizer, Al Slappy of the Eastside Community Group, says he plans to be at the Eastside Memorial Park by 4 pm Wednesday. Plans are still being discussed for an impromptu gathering around that time, but no firm plans have been laid out.
Last year featured a community barbecue at the park, as well as a historical discussion, candlelight vigil and a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth recognizes the ending of slavery and was officially approved as a federal holiday in 2021. Emporia’s first official celebration two years ago came right after President Joe Biden signed the legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
