Well over 100 riders and runners made their way to Reading Saturday morning not for competition, but rather to support a great cause.
The 13th annual Reading Tornado Trot and Trail launched Saturday from Reading City Park and organizers were very pleased with the turnout noting the community always turns up for the event. This includes a strong turnout of volunteers as well according to organizer Nancy Standiferd who says the event wouldn’t be possible without so many who give their time in several ways.
Originally a fundraiser to support recovery efforts following the 2011 EF3 tornado that blew through the town, the Tornado Trot and Trail has since evolved into a fundraising supporting the work of Handlebars of Hope a charitable organization that provides free bikes to disadvantaged residents both locally and abroad, especially in Mexico. Organizer Jann Briggs says they are proud to support Handlebars adding it is one way the community can repay the kindness that was shown to them in the aftermath of the 2011 tornado.
Briggs adds that everyone who participates in the event is doing it out of the kindness of their hearts as it is not a competitive race. The “medals” for this year’s event were not silver or gold but rather sugar cookies which Briggs believes illustrates the event’s fun and laid-back atmosphere.
This year’s event featured the traditional 5K run and walk as well as a 14, 26 and 36 mile bike ride. Fundraising totals are pending.
