Emporia State’s King Lake is in a blue-green algae watch until further notice.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced the advisory Friday. A watch means algae has been found and a harmful bloom is either present or likely to start.
KDHE has signage to this effect posted at the lake. It says water may be unsafe for humans and animals alike.
People need to avoid areas where algae has accumulated. They also need to keep pets and livestock away from the water. Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged, while boating and fishing are considered safe.
Speaking of boating, spray inhalation may cause health issues for some people, so direct contact with water should be avoided or followed by washing with clean water.
Any fish caught in areas where algae is present or suspected must be cleaned completely with potable water. People should only eat the fillet portion.
