Things moved at a leisurely pace for the 44th annual David Traylor Zoo open house Sunday.
Zoo Director Lisa Keith says there’s a lot of learning that happens at the zoo on a normal basis, especially during events like the open house.
Residents had access to the off-exhibit area, including the meal kitchen and quarantine area, for the only time of the year. There was other stuff to see Sunday, including the recently expanded and renovated Zoo Education Center. Emporia Friends of the Zoo Board President Debbie Williams says the whole event is designed to spark curiosity and learning, especially for kids.
In addition, folks could cool off with the Emporia Fire Department’s equipment, learn more about specific animals from zoo docents and get refreshments from the Carnivore Cafe and Traci’s Shaved Ice.
