Scammers are at it again locally.
According to Emporia Police Captain Ray Mattas, EPD has recently received several reports of a scam effort that begins with a pop-up message on an individual’s computer claiming they have a virus. The individual is then directed to call a phone number and after doing so is then contacted by scammers who “spoof” — disguise — their number as the Emporia Police Department’s.
The scammers have impersonated officers and claimed the victim has a warrant out for their arrest and they will be taken into custody unless they pay the scammers. Mattas reminds residents that no law enforcement agency, Emporia Police and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, will ever call someone to demand payment for warrants.
If you have received such a message or phone call, you are asked to hang up immediately and contact local law enforcement.
