The topic of sediment loss will highlight a special seminar coming soon in Lyon County.
The Kansas Soil Health Alliance has set up a “Managing Sediment Loss Through Soil Health” event July 1. The event will actually be held in two places, with the morning session at the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge in Hartford. There will be information about the dredging project at John Redmond Reservoir, presentations from Wildlife Refuge partners and equipment demonstrations before a tour of producer Kevin Wellnitz’s farm.
The afternoon session is at the Flint Hills Technical College Metcalf Building at 3301 West 18th, including lunch, presentations on soil deposition changes and protecting sediment loss before a farmer panel on how to manage sediment loss.
Soil Health Alliance Coordinator Jennifer Simmelink says sediment loss is a more important topic than a lot of people may think.
The event is free of charge. Registration is encouraged by the close of business Monday, but Simmelink says residents can walk in and register July 1. Residents interested in registering can do so online at kssoilhealth.org.
