Court proceedings in an Emporia aggravated battery case are on hold until the results of a competency evaluation can be compiled and studied.
Emanul Cornejo faces charges of aggravated battery, interference with law enforcement and other counts after an alleged incident in the 700 block of Sylvan in early May. One person was taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected serious injuries.
During a preliminary hearing this week, Cornejo’s defense attorney, Rick Meier, requested a competency evaluation and the request was granted by Magistrate Judge Doug Jones. CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness has been appointed to handle the evaluation. Prosecutors requested the continuance and that was also approved.
