Emporia Public Works crews were busy fixing water lines in northwest Emporia on Tuesday.
Crews repaired water mains in the 1300 block of Stanton. They also had to work on separate repairs on Dover Road, one in the 1600 block and another that developed in the 1700 block shortly after repairs were completed further south.
Public Works Director Dean Grant says staffers handled the heat as well as possible, given the work load and the weather conditions.
Speaking of water matters, Public Works staffers are replacing water meters this summer. Grant says work started late last year and is picking up speed. This also signals a change in how the meters are read. The current system involves meter technicians driving around town to collect data.
Grant says a meter body lasts about 10 years for accuracy purposes and then the meters slow down after that, meaning the city isn’t completely tracking how much water is being used.
