There are still several decisions to be made before the 2025 Lyon County budget is finalized, but based on the first reading of the budget the county is in great shape.
County Controller Dan Williams presented the first draft of the budget to county commissioners during their regular action meeting Thursday morning. In its current form, the budget has a modest mill increase of 0.091 percent with a tentative dollar amount of just over $24.5 million reflecting a 1.8 percent increase over 2024.
Williams stressed that those numbers are tentative as there are several areas where commissioners could make some adjustments to bring the budget down in the next few weeks, starting with budget requests from outside agencies and county departments.
Williams adds the county’s healthcare costs are currently listed as flat in the budget, however, based on conversations with consultants there is a possibility those costs could come down by five percent before all is said and done. The next step for commissioners will be to notify the County Clerk’s office of their intentions to either exceed or not exceed the revenue-neutral rate which must be done by July 20.
The budget will be due to the clerk’s office by August 25.
