The first half of 2024 has been very active for Emporia State University.
Already, ESU has kept tuition flat for the coming academic year. It has lowered fees, including the elimination of parking fees. It has started construction of the new Student Nursing + Wellness Center and demolished Butcher Education Building. And it has announced a bevy of new or restructured scholarships — including a brand-new Legacy Scholarship this week.
On KVOE’s ESU Buzz segment Thursday, Assistant Director for Undergraduate Admissions and Honors College Dean Mary Shivley called the new opportunity a “game-changer.”
The scholarships begin for the fall semester. They are for students whose parents attended ESU. Scholarships are $1,000 per year for four years. They are available for students in any major and any concentration, and they are available for both current and incoming students. Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Kelly Heine says the scholarships are “stackable” with other scholarships, and it didn’t take long to go from concept to reality.
Shivley says the recent announcements demonstrate Emporia State’s commitment to reduce the higher education costs while making it easier for students to graduate with a quality degree and a great college experience.
Lyon County and neighboring counties have a strong alumni base, with about 6,000 alums living in the listening area. Heine says the area alumni concentration is second only to the Kansas City metro area, and the Lyon County alumni base is on par with Wichita.
