A day 10 years in the making has finally arrived for the Kansas Turnpike Authority.
Cashless tolling officially began early Monday, and Chief Executive Officer Steve Hewitt says the start was smooth. On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia on Monday — just a few hours after the official launch — Hewitt said things are working as Turnpike administrators expected.
Hewitt reminded drivers used to stopping at toll booths to “keep moving forward” because drivers no longer need to stop there. Drivers with KTAGs will see their charges on their online account, while drivers without KTAGs will be billed. Tollbooths are being “decommissioned,” with demolition and lane reconfiguration to follow over the next 18 months.
Drivers wanting to call the KTA’s three customer service centers this week will not be able to do so, but that service will return next week. June billing will take place in the prior system and then migrated to the new DriveKS.com system.
