Coffey County is getting significant federal funding for a trail system.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says the countywide trails planning and design amount, almost $2.65 million, will help to plan and design nearly 50 miles of a multi-use trail system for six communities, thus adding a transportation option for “non-motorized and vulnerable users.” Other benefits include economic development through additional tourism and improvements to environmental sustainability.
The Coffey County project, along with separate awards for Topeka and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, also means free grant application technical help from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub, designed to serve as a resource center for communities seeking funds through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Funding comes through the US Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, or RAISE, discretionary grant program. This is an effort to support road, rail, transit and port projects nationwide.
