After former president Donald Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, some of the state’s established lawmakers in Congress or others wanting seats denounced the incident.
Republican Senator Roger Marshall said that “we, as a nation, need to pause and grasp the magnitude of this event. There is no place for this violence in civil society.”
Republican Derek Schmidt, running for the Kansas Second Congressional District seat being vacated by fellow Republican Jake LaTurner, asked for prayers for the country, everybody affected by the shooting, law enforcement and for Trump, saying, “The People, not violent criminals, will decide our great nation’s path forward.
Democrat Nancy Boyda, also running for the Second District, said, “We must stand united in condemning such
actions, as they pose a serious threat to the democratic process and the safety of all individuals, regardless of political affiliation.”
Trump says he was shot in the right ear barely 10 minutes into his speech Saturday evening. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, a registered Republican, and an innocent bystander were killed. Two others were wounded. No motive has been determined to this point. The FBI says evidence points to this being a “lone wolf” incident, but the investigation continues.
