Scams from people allegedly representing law enforcement agencies are nothing new, and the latest one involves the state’s investigative agency.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says scammers have been identifying themselves as agents, using technology to “spoof” or represent the KBI number on caller IDs.
The KBI says it may call if you were part of a case or witnessed something noteworthy, but that would be to schedule an interview. The KBI will not request Social Security or credit card information. It also will not request birthdates or other personal information.
The KBI has several tips if you receive a cold call from somebody allegedly representing the agency:
*Never provide personal information and never transfer funds over the phone unless you made the call to a known entity, whether a business, service or bank
*If a caller has any sense of urgency or is acting suspicious when representing a business, service, bank or law enforcement agency, hang up, look up the published number for that entity and call the number to verify the nature and truthfulness of the call in question.
*If you are concerned about calls from the KBI, call agency headquarters at 785-296-8200.
