Showers and storms brought brief heavy rain to much of the KVOE listening area early Tuesday, but not all of it.
Verified rainfall amounts include 0.05 inches at the KVOE studios. Other totals are currently pending.
More showers and storms are likely by late Tuesday night. Area counties are under a marginal severe weather risk for hail and wind.
KVOE and KVOE.com will have updates as warranted.
4:15 am Tuesday: Severe storms possible early, late Tuesday; severe thunderstorm watch issued for Morris and Wabaunsee counties
After a brutal combination of heat and humidity Monday, conditions will be more pleasant later in the week — but we need to get through two possible periods of severe weather first.
Area residents have a marginal severe weather risk for wind and hail through mid-morning Tuesday, and a severe thunderstorm watch has now been activated until 9 am for Morris and Wabaunsee counties. Wind gusts up to 75 mph and hail to the size of eggs are possible.
The afternoon hours should be sunny with highs in the mid-90s before a second round of storms, including possible severe wind and hail. The National Weather Service says the most likely area for severe storm activity will be south of Emporia, but isolated strong to severe storms are possible in the immediate Emporia area through early Wednesday morning.
After showers and storms end shortly after sunrise Wednesday, high temperatures will be in the mid-80s. Highs in the low to mid-80s will continue into early next week.
Monday’s air temperatures climbed to 104, right at the projected high temperature and the record set in 2000. The peak heat index climbed briefly to 111, above Monday’s initial forecast of 107, and stayed between 107-109 for most of the afternoon.
