Firefighters went to two reports of out-of-control fires that turned out not to be as serious as first indicated.
Emporia Fire went to the 2700 block of US Highway 50, or the northeast part of the Fairgrounds, shortly before 4:30 pm. Firefighters say there was a small controlled burn that wasn’t reported to Lyon County Emergency Communications.
Lyon County District 4, Emporia Fire’s rural division, went to Interstate 35 near mile marker 135 shortly after 6:40 pm. However, that turned out to be a planned trash burn.
Also, Emporia Fire responded to Camp Alexander after a carbon monoxide detector indicated the gas in one of the camp buildings. Firefighters say the detector malfunctioned, but the building was still evacuated as a precaution.
