A global technology outage has reached Emporia.
Shortly before 8 am, USD 253 Emporia announced PowerSchool went unavailable as part of the outage. This is important for parents because it involves all PowerSchool features, including enrollment verification after enrollment officially opened Wednesday. It also means the EZMeal app also can’t be used until further notice.
Shortly after 8:30 am, the city of Emporia said it couldn’t process utility payments by phone. Issues have since been resolved. City Manager Trey Cocking says the recent push towards global connectedness works — until it doesn’t.
And Newman Regional Health is reporting solutions to issues, although it isn’t currently specifying any issues it has noted Friday morning. Director of Business Development Steven Bazan says issues have been random, so evaluations are taking place on a computer-by-computer basis and any issues have been resolved with a simple reboot. There have been no indications of any data breach and no impact to patient schedules.
In addition, all state driver’s license offices, including the one at Emporia’s Flinthills Mall, had to close for the rest of Friday due to the situation.
CrowdStrike — an American cybersecurity technology firm that provides cloud workload protection, threat intelligence and cyberattack response services — said the outage, which sparked chaos for many, was not a cyberattack. Instead, there was an issue with software and a fix had been deployed.
