Court procedures are underway in an attempted murder case announced this week in Emporia.
Following his first official court appearance Thursday, Emporian Justin Colby Barrett will return to court for a preliminary hearing Aug. 21.
Barrett has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and six other counts, including three counts of aggravated battery, and single counts of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated child endangerment and criminal threat. The charges stem from an alleged incident Monday where Barrett allegedly beat and strangled the victim and also used a mallet against the victim.
