The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Bureau of Environmental Field Services is investigating the recent discovery of a fish kill near Emporia.
KDHE was called to the Cottonwood River from Roads P to 150 this past Thursday, about three miles east of Emporia, and found “numerous” carp, buffalo and drum dead in a report emailed to KVOE News. Roughly 400 buffalo had been dead for several days, along with about 20 drum, 10 channel catfish and less than five grass carp.
The reason or reasons behind the fish kill are unclear. Weather and river conditions were normal when the fish were discovered. There were also no signs of river contamination, potential dumping or herbicide usage.
