A stream advisory continues for two Lyon County creeks after extremely heavy rainfall early this month.
Portions of Hill Creek and 142 Mile Creek southeast of Allen have been in advisory status after flooding caused a raw sewage release from Allen’s wastewater treatment plant, possibly elevating levels of bacteria and other contaminants. Flooding followed 5-9 inches of rain along and north of US Highway 56 as part of strong and severe thunderstorm activity in early July.
The city of Allen is working to resolve all related issues. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says it will lift the advisory when plant operations are back to normal and primary, or swimming, contact is deemed safe. Until then, KDHE says people and should not enter the affected creeks.
