Federal officials have indicted a man who allegedly carried out cybercrimes for a North Korean military intelligence agency as part of a conspiracy case to hack NASA, military bases and American hospitals.
Rim Jong Hyok is has officially been indicted with conspiracy to commit computer hacking and conspiracy to commit promotion of money laundering. He is accused of attacks involving at least one unnamed Kansas hospital in 2021. The hospital had to pay about $100,000 in Bitcoin to get data returned after a ransomware attack.
Federal prosecutors say 17 entities in 11 states were targeted. Defense and energy companies in China, South Korea and Taiwan wre also attacked.
An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday. There is a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to Hyok or other members of the North Korean Reconnaisance General Bureau Andariel Unit.
