Extreme heat is expected all week, starting Monday.
Air temperatures will be as high as 101 Monday, followed by air temperatures possibly reaching 105 for Tuesday and Wednesday. Air temperatures will likely be at or above 100 for Thursday and Friday. Peak heat index readings could be 105-110 all week.
National Weather Service meteorologist Daniel Reese says hot, humid high pressure will be locked in place all week.
The Weather Service and health officials are urging residents to take several heat-related precautions, starting with drinking lots of water and wearing light and loose-fitting clothes. With an excessive heat warning going from 1 pm Monday through at least 7 pm Thursday, the Weather Service encourages residents to adjust their work schedules to handle any strenuous activities in the morning and evening as well as taking frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade.
In response to the oncoming heatwave, several cooling centers have been activated at the following locations.
*Emporia Police Department lobby, 518 Mechanic. Pets are allowed if they can be controlled.
*Lyon County Sheriff’s Office lobby, 425 Mechanic. Pets are allowed if they can be controlled.
*First Congregational Church of Emporia, 326 West 12th Avenue: 9 am to noon Monday through Friday and 1:30 pm to 4 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Pets are welcome so long as they can be controlled.
*Bloom House Youth Services, 301 West 11th Avenue:
Open for TEENS and their families. You must have a teen present to access the center.
*Emporia Public Library, 110 E 6th Avenue: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and 1 pm to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. Service animals are welcome, but pets and ESA’s (Emotional Support Animals) are prohibited.
The current forecast limits rain chances to late Wednesday night through lunchtime Thursday. Weekend rain totals:
