Excessive heat is in place all week for the KVOE listening area and much of the central third of the country.
Most of Kansas will be in an excessive heat warning from 1 pm Monday until at least 7 pm Thursday. Air temperatures will be as high as 101 Monday, followed by air temperatures possibly reaching 105 for Tuesday and Wednesday. Air temperatures will likely be at or above 100 for Thursday and Friday. Peak heat index readings could be 105-110 all week.
Given the conditions, the National Weather Service is urging you to be prepared — and be out of the heat as much as possible. Another tip: change your schedule, if possible, so any strenuous activity happens in the morning or evening. It’s a step taken by Emporia’s City Engineering Department, although City Engineer Jim Ubert says it’s a shift in timing, not a cut in workload.
Other recommended steps from health officials and the National Weather Service include drinking lots of water, wearing light and loose-fitting clothes, taking frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, making sure children and pets aren’t left behind in vehicles as people run errands and checking up on elderly neighbors.
Be sure to stay tuned to KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more updates and information throughout the week. Lyon County Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga joins KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:20 am Tuesday with more information.
