One local and two area bodies of water remain in blue-green algae warnings.
Emporia State University’s King Lake has now been in an algae warning for over a month, while the Melvern Outlet River Pond and Swim Pond have been warned for the second straight week.
Algae warnings are for confirmed or likely blooms, which create several toxins that can be harmful or deadly if the algae is consumed. Toxins can be eaten, inhaled or absorbed by skin contact, with symptoms including rash, headache, sore throat, diarrhea and fever.
Suspected algae-related health issues for humans and pets should be reported online at kdheks.gov/1163. More information is available online at kdheks.gov/hab.
