Street repairs are coming to parts of West 12th Avenue suffering moderate to heavy damage after water main breaks late last week.
The most significant damage was at West, with a break both in the intersection and just south of it, but there was also notable damage across 12th at Washington and more damage on the north side of 12th near Walnut. On KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Monday, Public Works Director Dean Grant said the goal is to handle flowable fill as soon as possible and start concrete work Tuesday.
The plan is also to begin street repairs at 15th and Sherwood because that was the first of the four water main breaks Friday. That zone will be followed by the one at 12th and West.
Grant says there is a chance additional work may be needed for the water mains in that immediate part of Emporia. These unexpected repairs will likely have no impact on the city’s ongoing 24th and Prairie water main replacement project, and it should have no impact on the Southeast Transmission Line project from 12th and Garfield to South and Carter.

2:30 pm Sunday: Street repair schedule pending after Friday’s trio of damaging water main breaks
A three-block stretch of West 12th is closed until further notice after a trio of water main breaks Friday.
Breaks developed near the intersections of West, Washington and Walnut between 11 am and 11 pm, affecting residents and businesses nearby like Emporia Floral and Gufler Mansion. Pipe repairs were extensive and lengthy, with the break at Washington Street taking over five hours to fix and the situation at West taking almost 10 hours to resolve.
Street repairs are needed, and there is currently no word on when those will take place so traffic flow can return to normal. Drivers will need to find alternate routes around the overall work zone for the time being.
Public Works Director Dean Grant will join KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Monday with more information.
