Unofficial results are in and the general election ballot is tentatively set following election night Tuesday.
Locally, Lyon County Commission Second District Incumbent Republican Doug Peck is set to face a challenge from Democrat Ron McCoy in November after finishing with 847 votes. Challenger Sid Morgan finished with 364 votes.
Following the election, Peck commended Morgan for stepping up to run.
Morgan, however, says Peck hasn’t done the job for the Second District.
In the Lyon County Commission Third District Race, Chris Bartel was selected as the Republican candidate finishing with 344 votes. Bartel thanked all who voted for him and says his focus will not change heading into the general election.
Warren Schmidt finished second with 219 votes.
Jarom Smith finished third with 149 votes and offered his full support to Bartel.
Jon Vopat finished the election with 144 votes and echoed Smith’s sentiment.
Bartel is now set to face Democrat Bill Neinstedt in the general election to fill the commission seat currently held by longtime commission chair Rollie Martin who is not seeking another term in office.
At the state level, Mike Argabright won the Republican race for the Kansas Senate 17th District, defeating David Schneider 2,065 votes to 848 in Lyon County and winning by nearly 20 percentage points districtwide. Argabright says he had a lot of support across the board.
Also, Kansas House 60th District Representative incumbent Mark Schreiber finished with more than 1,000 votes in Lyon County well ahead of the better than 600 votes received by challenger Will Spencer. Schreiber is now set for a rematch with Democrat Mic McGuire in November.
While he won’t know if he’s returning to the statehouse until November, Schreiber says he plans to continue working as if he is already there.
Total voter turnout for Lyon County was just under 20 percent, not quite what Election Officer Tammy Vopat was hoping for. That being said, Vopat thanked all of the voters who made their way to the polls and commended her staff for another job well done.
That said, Vopat reminded residents her and her team’s work is far from over.
The official vote canvas will take place next week with the general election slated for Tuesday, November 5.
