Two area counties could see federal reimbursement funds if a storm-related request from Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is approved.
Governor Kelly has formally filed paperwork requesting federal aid after severe weather May 19. Morris and Wabaunsee counties are among 14 counties in the request.
If approved, this would trigger federal Public Assistance program reimbursement funds for roads and other public infrastructure.
Governor Kelly is also asking for an unspecified amount in federal Hazard Mitigation grants to offset or eliminate long-term disaster risks to people and property.
Separately, the governor has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for more time to file paperwork for major disaster funding after sever weather June 26-July 7. This would also approve Public Assistance reimbursements if approved.
