Another superload is coming through Emporia this week, and traffic adjustments begin Tuesday.
Starting at 8 am Tuesday, northbound traffic on Merchant will be detoured east to Burlingame Road as the city prepares for the superload going through town Wednesday.
Crews will also temporarily take down the traffic signals on Commercial at Fifth, Seventh and 12th, as well as the stoplight at 12th and Merchant. In addition, the traffic light at 12th and Merchant will be a four-way stop from 8 am Tuesday until the superload goes through town.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says the load Wednesday is headed to California. It’s 22 feet tall, 22 feet wide and 230 feet long. It’s also over 600,000 pounds.
Ubert says four more superloads came through Emporia on Monday, but those were shorter — 16 feet — so the traffic adjustments noted for Wednesday’s superload were not needed. Those loads were 100 to 125 feet long and are between 150,000 to 200,000 pounds.
