The Humane Society of the Flint Hills is encouraging dog and cat owners to pick up free pet food Saturday.
The Humane Society has the special pet food giveaway from 10-11 am at Dryer Park, just west of the Emporia Water Treatment Plant. Board President Lori DeWinkler says pet owners can haul away one or two bags.
The Humane Society operated the Emporia Animal Shelter for a decade, but that period came to an end this week when Prairie Paws began a three-year contract. DeWinkler says the relationship between the two agencies has been outstanding, and she wishes Prairie Paws well as it gets started.
The Humane Society is changing its focus now that it is no longer operating Emporia’s animal shelter. DeWinkler says the Humane Society is now emphasizing the needs of abused pets, and it has a special public meeting at 5:30 pm Aug. 20 at Emporia State University’s HPER Building to gain feedback on how it should proceed, both independently and in conjunction with other animal welfare groups.
