Students at Emporia Public Schools are back at it.
Wednesday is the first official day of classes, and Superintendent Allison Anderson-Harder says there are a lot of students in the buildings, based on enrollment stats.
Back-to-school means renewed emphasis on safety around schools, and Police Capt. Ray Mattas says one of the big issues is safety around buses.
School zones are in effect again. Mattas says officers may start with a warning, but repeated violations may well get tickets.
Speaking of safety, Tuesday’s Jump Start activities for new students, either to the district or their respective buildings, were eventful at Emporia Middle School, which was part of a major power outage, and at Riverside, which had some flooding outside the school after storms dropped up to 6.25 inches of rain on the city.
