The heavy rainfall much of the area had Tuesday morning had some impact on the US Drought Monitor map, but not as much as one might think.
Abnormally dry conditions had moved across most of the KVOE listening area recently, covering the entire area except for the northeast corner of Lyon County, all of Osage County and far east Wabaunsee County as of the Aug. 8 update. Thursday’s map shows most of the north half of Lyon County and the north half of Chase County as clear from drought along with the aforementioned areas. The rest of the area remains abnormally dry.
Area residents got anywhere from an inch to 6.25 inches of rain Tuesday, with the heaviest totals in and immediately around Emporia. Rain totals of half in inch to 1.5 inches from late Wednesday night into early Thursday will factor into the Aug. 22 update map.
