Car enthusiasts gathered in front of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for a benefit car show Sunday.
The church and Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention teamed up to help the Corky’s Cupboard food pantry at Emporia State University. Among those with vehicles was Shawn Sweat, who brought a 1966 Cobra replica that he bought in Wichita.
Beacon for Hope Director Melissa Owen says she and others involved were happy to help.
St Mark’s Pastor Kent Happel says last year’s event demonstrated the need to keep the event going, so he was glad to partner with Beacon for Hope because the missions intertwine in an event like this.
Fifteen vehicles were on hand Sunday. The event brought in over $200 in cash donations and over 150 non-perishable food items.
This was the second such car show to benefit Corky’s Cupboard, which helps students offset food insecurity issues. Corky’s Cupboard changed locations, expanded and added the Basic Needs Coordinator position inside the ESU Memorial Union earlier this year. Since it opened 10 years ago, Corky’s Cupboard has helped over 3,000 students.
