Southwick House leadership is celebrating two notable grants as it moves towards serving women and families in crisis situations.
Southwick House has announced nearly $27,000 in combined grant funding from the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund and the Morgan Wilkie Trust. Southwick House Director Susan Brinkman:
The 79 Fund donated $25,000 for a new playground, while the Wilkie Fund grant project will help create space to be utilized by elderly residents. Brinkman says other grant announcements can be expected through October, and Southwick House is also planning for its first-ever involvement in the Emporia Community Foundation’s Match Day fundraiser. Plans are also ongoing as Southwick House organizes the Turkey Day Dash operated for years by the Walnut Elementary PTO.
Funds will roll into the agency’s effort towards raising $3.6 million for purchasing and renovating 115 East Logan. Southwick House is looking to create a roughly 9,000 square-foot facility on nearly seven acres of property. Southwick House is planning to serve women and their children in the congregate areas of the home. In addition, with two non-congregate units, the agency can serve entire families as well as single-parent dads or moms with teenagers.
Under its prior name of Plumb Place, the agency helped women in crisis situations through services like emergency shelter, transitional housing, case management, life skills education and therapy groups.
