A contract for recycling services could be approved by Emporia city commissioners Wednesday.
Commissioners could approve the “single stream recyclables processing amendment” alongside a solid waste contract amendment with Hamm Companies as part of the action meeting. Hamm has requested notable increases in the recycling amendment, including the base rate going from $45 to $105 per ton and the trucking rate from $295 to $625 per load. If approved, this would mean a roughly $100,000 increase in city costs. This would also extend the contract through 2026.
In other business, commissioners could also award the City Connecting Link Improvement Program contract to APAC Shears for over $790,000. Work this fall will include Commercial Street from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks to 12th and Merchant from 12th to Interstate 35.
Commissioners also have Community Development Block Grant items regarding the Gazette Collective project to approve, as well as a city code amendment about animals and fowl and a contract for bridge improvements on South Avenue just east of Prairie. In addition, Tyler Curtis will be sworn in to fill the unexpired term of the late Danny Giefer after Curtis was chosen at the commission action meeting two weeks ago.
Study meeting items include ongoing conversations about utility fund budgets, discussions on stormwater utilities and the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to Schools program and the appointment of a commissioner to Emporia Enterprises.
The action meeting begins at 11 am Wednesday at the Municipal Court Room. The study meeting follows at City Conference Room 1AB.
