The Emporia State soccer team showed grit on the defensive end but couldn’t generate any offense in a 2-0 loss at UMKC on Thursday night. The Lady Hornets held their own defensively despite constant pressure, but found few scoring chances against the DI Roos. ESU was outshot 19-2 in the game including 7-0 in shots on goal. The Roos had six corner kicks to E-State’s two. Despite the barrage of shots, UMKC could only scratch the scoreboard once in the first half for a 1-0 halftime lead. Goalkeeper Mackenzi Goen kept ESU within a score until UMKC tallied again with less than nine minutes to play in the match. Goen finished with five saves. ESU opens regular season play Friday, September 6 on the road at Minnesota State-Mankato.
