Brenda Young’s 24 years of experience in the zoological field has paid off.
Young was recently named the new Director of the David Traylor Zoo replacing Lisa Keith.
Young joined KVOE’s Newsmaker Segment on Thursday and says the size and quality of the zoo intrigued her to apply for the position.
Young comes to Emporia from Capron Park Zoo in Massachusetts where she served as Assistant Director since 2014. Young’s experience includes zoo operations, revenue generation, guest services, public relations, budgeting, project management, and collection planning.
Young’s early focal point will be learning how the zoo operates, getting to know the staff better, insight into the animals and visitors and the area’s culture.
Young’s goal is to make a difference, make things better, see people smile, and watch them build that connection with wildlife and nature.
Keith has moved into an Assistant Director’s role with the zoo until October 1. After that, Keith will be available remotely to help Young before officially retiring on January 1, 2025.
A retirement reception for Keith will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 27 at the zoo.
