Severe weather in mid-May is leading to federal aid for residents in two area counties.
President Joe Biden’s major disaster declaration for severe weather May 19 will benefit residents in Morris and Wabaunsee counties along with 12 other counties.
Part of the federal aid involves adjustments from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which will offer a 90-day moratorium on mortgage foreclosures issued by the Federal Housing Administration, a separate moratorium on mortgage foreclosures to Native American borrowers through the Section 184 Indian Home Loan Guarantee program and an automatic 90-day extension for Home Equity Conversion mortgages. Residents wanting information about storm-related adjustments through HUD need to call 800-304-9320.
The KVOE listening area saw high storm-generated winds up to 80 mph and related damage to trees and power equipment. Close to 4,000 Evergy customers lost power across the KVOE listening area, and there were several small storm-related fires that developed as well.
